Kelebihan :

2. Secara umum mesin diesel memberikan torsi bawah lebih besar serta berfungsi terhadap pengendaraan di jalan off road. Bahkan kebutuhan torsi menjadi penting pada saat kita ingin menarik kendaraan yang rusak atau misalnya menarik kendaraan yang terjebak di jalur non aspal.
3. Seperti halnya bensin, pada bahan bakar solar juga mudah diperoleh dengan mudah baik di Stasiun Pengisian Bahan bakar Umum (SPBU) dalam kota ataupun luar kota.
4. Serta pertimbangan lain bahwa sifat bahan bakar diesel tidak terlalu berbahaya hal ini disebabkan tidak mudah terbakar bila tersulut percikan api.
5. Berkendara dibawah siraman hujan lebat maupun melintas pada kondisi jalan banjir tanpa harus takut hal ini disebabkan ruang mesin diesel tidak memiliki komponen elektrikal seperti distributor maupun kabel busi.
6. Jika rasio mesin bensin dibatasi oleh tekanan dari bensin serta udara. Pada mesin diesel tidak dibatasi hal ini disebabkan yang di kompres hanyalah udara. Semakin tinggi kompresi mesin diesel sehingga tenaganya kian bertambah serta sistem kerja mesin semakin efisien.
7. Mesin diesel memang terkenal bandel. Jika dirawat dengan benar daya tahannya lebih lama dibandingkan mesin bensin. Ini juga menjadi salah satu faktor penentu kenapa mesin diesel umumnya digunakan untuk armada transportasi seperti truk maupun kontainer besar.
Kelemahan :
1. Satu kelemahan tentunya yang dimiliki mesin diesel ialah suara mesin yang lebih berisik ketimbang mesin bensin.
2. Injektor terhadap mesin diesel bila tercampur dengan air atau jenis partikel lainnya menjadi mudah bermasalah. Hal ini disebabkan delivery valve di bagian injection pump jika terkena air menyebabkan komponennya akan tersumbat (mengendap alias berkarat). Serta, untuk biaya perbaikannya maupun suku cadangnya relatif mahal.
3. Pada akselerasi mesinnya mempunyai respon lebih lambat ketimbang mesin bensin. Akan tetapi demikian saat ini pihak pabrikan telah ada yang mengaplikasi turbocharger maupun supercharger guna memperoleh tenaga spontan.
4. Beban pajak kendaraan bermotor mesin diesel lebih tinggi daripada dengan kendaraan mesin bensin hal ini disebabkan kebanyakan cc mesinnya lebih besar. Rata-rata berkapasitas 2.000 cc keatas.
5. Tingkat pencemaran udara yang keluar pada sisa pembakaran lebih tinggi.
6. Harga mobil kondisi baru biasanya relatif mahal daripada mesin bensin untuk tipe yang sama. Misal Toyota Kijang Innova diesel New V A/T Diesel dijual Rp. 302.250.000,- sedangkan tipe sama yang bermesin bensin dijual Rp Rp. 287.250.000,-.
